Izwi ("the App") is developed by Stewart Burton ("we", "us"). By downloading or using the App you agree to these terms. If you use the App on Apple platforms, Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies.
Izwi is a South African word and phrase discovery app. A free tier gives you the daily word, a curated subset of the archive, and limited saves. The full experience is available through the Izwi Pro subscription.
Izwi documents real South African language - slang, idiom, and cultural references from many communities. Definitions, usage notes, and origin stories are provided in good faith for cultural and educational purposes. Some entries describe informal or mature language, which can be filtered in Settings. Language is living; if you believe an entry is inaccurate or disrespectful, contact us and we will review it.
You may use the App for personal, non-commercial purposes. You may not copy, scrape, resell, or redistribute the App's content database, audio, or artwork without written permission. Sharing individual word cards through the App's share features is encouraged.
The App, its design, content curation, and audio are owned by us or our licensors. The languages and words themselves belong to the communities who speak them - our claim is to the curation, writing, and presentation, not the language.
The App is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee that content is error-free or that the App will be uninterrupted. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential damages arising from use of the App.
We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. Continued use of the App after changes means you accept the updated terms.
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa.
